The Barack Obama shout-out that closes the album - 'My President' with special guest Nas - works much better with flippant verses ('We ready for damn change/So you all let the man shine') more suitable for a man who prefers to be called 'The Snowman.' Same goes for 'Circulate' and its great line about oil prices ('Gas higher than me') but The Recession abandons politics often enough that you can't call it ponderous or even a concept album.
Then Jeezy enters trading his non-stop swagger for social commentary, and while the singalong thug chorus is as strong as ever, the rapper's transformation from cocaine-slinging king to voice of the people is unconvincing, especially when he mentions his personal driver and how his 'make it rain' sessions at the strip club are getting more conservative. The opening title track features a collage of some very 2008 news reports where America is going broke while the 'they just don't care about us' feeling sweeps the nation. via Island/DefJam.Dropping the sequential album titles for his third release, Young Jeezy's The Recession introduces itself as anything but Thug Motivation 103. TM103: Hustlerz Ambition is slated for release on Dec. (“Life’s a bitch but she’s the only love I know” –Jay-Z) Jeezy himself is in rare form on the track, displaying a rare moment of celebration and vulnerability. Though Andre’s verse leaked to the ‘Net some time ago, Jay-Z adds a monster to this well orchestrated number. “I Do” may be one of the biggest records of Jeezy’s career. “Leave You Alone” is destined for radio greatness.ĥ. Playing with Biggie’s infamous line, “ If the head right, Jeezy there every night,” he keeps it G while getting his mack on. Ne-Yo helps the ATLien get one out for the ladies on TM103. He referenced Juvy’s verse from “A Million and One Things” ( “I can’t please everybody, but I love my folks If I give ya everything, baby, I’ma be broke” –Juvenile ) as inspiration for the cut, which deals with folks who’ve helped Jeezy only in hopes of receiving something back.Ĥ. 3.ěefore playing “Nothing,” Jeezy cited Juvenile as one of his favorite rappers.
